The “Free and open Indo - Pacific” strategy and impacts on potential
for Vietnam - India economic engagement
Dr. Nguyễn Thị Phong Lan*
The Indo - Pacific is a term for tropical waters that stretch from the west of Indian Ocean to the west and mid-west of the Pacific Ocean. The concept of “Free and Open Indo - Pacific” covers both geographical term and literal meaning of the "free and open" ideas. The Indo - Pacific means not only a geo-political space but also a landmark for India to play a larger role in the shaping security architecture in an enlarged region from Eastern Africa to Western Pacific. The increasing integration between the two oceans and a rising India will make many contributions to peace and prosperity in the region. Four countries in ASEAN, including Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand, have showed their increasing support for the new strategy. Vietnam and India have maintained a strong bilateral relationship and the fact that India becomes one of the four pillars of the "Free and Open Indo – Pacific" strategy will not have remarkable impacts on the economic ties between Vietnam and India./.
