India, US holding talks to step up cyber security; seek to tap digital economies

NEW DELHI:India and USA are currently holding cyber security dialogue in America with an eye on framing measures to secure cyber space with the burgeoning digital economics in this country and the Modi government initiating ambitious Digital India program.


Cyber security cooperation is emerging as a key element in bilateral partnership. Besides deliberations on making cyber space secure amid spate of hacking by both state and non-state actors and use of social media platform by terror groups, India is keen to seek expertise from USA to make cyberspace secure considering growth in digital economics and its potential in the coming years here, officials indicated to ET. The Indian side at the Dialogue is being led by Deputy National Security Advisor  Arvind Gupta.

India has already emerged as a leader in the area of Information Technology. With Indian entrepreneurs eyeing to significantly increase their presence in cyber world and e-commerce gaining in popularity with every passing day securing cyberspace is imperative, officials indicated. Besides, the Modi government is going an extra mile to safeguard cyberspace following the launch of Digital India project. 

Digital India aims to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The programme will be implemented in phases from the current year till 2018. It also aims at bringing in public accountability through delivery of government's services electronically. The source of funding for most of the e-Governance projects at present is through budgetary provisions of respective Ministries/Departments in the Central or State governments One of the core elements of this programme is digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen, governance and service on demand and digital empowerment of citizens. 

Securing cyber space is therefore necessity, officials indicated. The cyber security dialogue has also gained importance ahead of PM's visit to San Francisco on September 26 and 27 where a host of meetings with Silicon Valley top honchos including a meet CEOs of IT companies are being planned. He could also visit campuses of some top IT and technology firms including Google labs eyeing their support for one of his pet projects Digital India apart from visiting a key University campus in that area. Besides the big names in the world of IT, Modi might also interact with the startups and upcoming entrepreneurs, officials indicated.
